In the heart of Soweto is the Credo Mutwa Cultural Village. The outdoor exhibition is showcasing the works and inspiration of Credo Mutwa, an artist and a traditional healer. He was actively creating pieces of art for decades and is famous for his sculptures and buildings. Both he uses to convey important personal and political messages. Often, he contrasts traditional African folklore and techniques with modern ideas and Westernized trends. His sculptures, buildings and paintings invite visitors to peruse Mutwa’s pieces at leisure and to think about the concepts, motives and messages of each piece. His status as a traditional healer encourages many of Credo Mutwa’s followers to believe that he has the power to foretell the future as several of his pieces seems to predict certain world events, such as the sudden explosion of the AIDS epidemic and the attack on the Twin Towers on 11 September. This outdoor exhibition is a journey through the psyche and experience of this man. The Oppenheimer Tower next to the exhibition allows visitors to get a 360 degree view above oldest townships of Soweto. The Tower is another famous landmark in Soweto. As the Entrance to the Credo Mutwa Cultural Village is free, visitors are welcome to follow the South African tradition to give a donation to your guide.
